Description
Estonian director Grigori Kromanov's dazzling, paranoid mixture of locked-room mystery, 1970s Euro giallo, classic noir whodunit, and alien sci-fi DEAD MOUNTAINEER'S HOTEL ("HUKKUNUD ALPINISTI" HOTEL) - 1979, Tallinnfilm, 84 min. "I was on call to drive to a mountain hotel. The hotel's name was The Dead Mountaineer," says police inspector Peter Glebsky (Uldis Pūcītis) at the beginning of Estonian director Grigori Kromanov's dazzling, paranoid mixture of locked-room mystery, 1970s Euro giallo, classic noir whodunit, and (unbelievably) alien sci-fi ala THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. Based on a novel by famed Soviet authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (STALKER, HARD TO BE A GOD), the hall-of-mirrors plot follows Glebsky as he's trapped by avalanche in the ski lodge with a rogues' gallery of weird suspects: tubercular gangster Hinckus (Mikk Mikiver), creepy hotel owner Snewahr (Jüri Järvet, KING LEAR), a wall-climbing physicist (Lembit Peterson), a louche, wig-wearing beauty out of a Bryan Ferry song (Irena Kriauzaite) - oh, and the Dead Mountaineer's faithful St. Bernard. The interior of the hotel (brilliantly art directed by Tõnu Virve and Priit Vaher, and photographed by Jüri Sillart) is straight out of a Dario Argento or Sergio Martino thriller: all chrome-and-marble with Space Age modern designs, drenched in champagne and feather boas. Featuring a stellar electronica / prog score by composer Sven Grünberg, the film combines an eerie THE SHINING-like mountain locale with speculative sci-fi straight out of Chariots of the Gods. "This is the end of the road. The only way is back," as the hotel owner cryptically smiles. Newly restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile in collaboration with the Estonian Film Institute and Film Archive. In Estonian with English subtitles. Bonus Materials New 4K restoration from new 4K interpositive scan by Craig Rogers and Michael Coronado for Deaf Crocodile and color grade by Tyler Fagerstrom. A young woman from Kansas hires LA private detective Philip Marlowe to find her missing brother. PHILIP MARLOWE IS A PRIVATE EYE. FOR FIFTY BUCKS YOU CAN BUY HIS BRAIN, HIS FISTS AND HIS .44 MAGNUM SPECIAL. IF YOU WANT BLOOD, HE'LL GIVE YOU THAT, TOO! Following in the footsteps of Dick Powell (Murder, My Sweet) and Humphrey Bogart (The Big Sleep), James Garner (The Great Escape) brought iconic private investigator Philip Marlowe into the Age of Aquarius in this 1969 neo-noir based on Raymond Chandler's classic novel The Little Sister. When Orfamay Quest hires Philip Marlowe to find her brother, it seems like just another missing persons case. But soon enough Marlowe's investigation leads him on a trail of blackmail and murder, all of it seemingly linked to a mobster and his TV star mistress. Luscious starlets, pugnacious gangsters, suspicious cops and corpses with ice picks jammed in their necks... welcome to Marlowe country! Garner's easy-going style is a perfect match for Chandler's "shop-soiled Galahad", paving the way for his performance in classic TV show The Rockford Files. Meanwhile, the many suspects are brought vividly to life by the likes of Carroll O'Connor (All in the Family), Rita Moreno (West Side Story), Jackie Coogan (The Addams Family), Gayle Hunnicut (The Legend of Hell House) and none other than Bruce Lee (Enter the Dragon) making his American feature debut. With a flashy suit, a gun and a pocketful of money, he feels like a king but when trouble comes knocking, he realizes that waving a gun and pulling the trigger are two very different things. After the major studios refused to finance it, director Sadao Nakajima (The Japanese Godfather Trilogy) took this project to New Wave bastion the Art Theatre Guild. With a deeply impressive performance by Tsunehiko Watase (Sympathy for the Underdog) that predates Robert DeNiro's indelible turn as Travis Bickle in Scorsese's Taxi Driver by three years, Aesthetics of a Bullet is a lost gem of 1970s Japanese cinema ripe for rediscovery. Metal rules … but Hell is eternal. A family faces off with evil itself in a house from hell in this hard-rocking shocker from Sean Byrne, the director of The Loved Ones. Diehard metal-head and struggling artist Jesse (Ethan Embry, Cheap Thrills) moves with his wife (Shiri Appleby, UnReal) and daughter (Kiara Glasco) to a rural Texas town, unaware that the house they got for an unbelievable deal comes with a grisly history. Their dream home turns into a nightmare as disturbing demonic occurrences culminate with the appearance of Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince, Identity), the home’s former resident who’s destined to do the devil’s bidding. Featuring the music of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, and Sunn O))), The Devil’s Candy is "the complete midnight movie package … characters to root for, narrative, and a spot-on mix of scares [to] mess with your head", (Collider)!

A BODY TO LIVE IN offers an uncompromising look at BDSM performance and body modification artist Fakir Musafar and the communities that surrounded him A BODY TO LIVE IN offers an uncompromising look at the rise of BDSM performance art, body modification and the 'modern primitives' cultural movement through the agonies and ecstasies of transgressive artist Fakir Musafar and the communities that surrounded him. Blending rare archival footage with the voices of queer and artistic trailblazers, the film shows how pain, ritual, and transformation became tools of identity, survival, and self-expression. Weaving from early experiments and secret gatherings to the emergence of a global subculture shaped by the AIDS crisis and spiritual reinvention, Director Angelo Madsen (NORTH BY CURRENT) reveals not just the story of one artist, but a collective history of bodies in revolt - asking what it truly means to live freely in one's own skin.
