Dead Mountaineer's Hotel 4K 05/26 Blu-ray (Rental)

Description
Estonian director Grigori Kromanov's dazzling, paranoid mixture of locked-room mystery, 1970s Euro giallo, classic noir whodunit, and alien sci-fi DEAD MOUNTAINEER'S HOTEL ("HUKKUNUD ALPINISTI" HOTEL) - 1979, Tallinnfilm, 84 min. "I was on call to drive to a mountain hotel. The hotel's name was The Dead Mountaineer," says police inspector Peter Glebsky (Uldis Pūcītis) at the beginning of Estonian director Grigori Kromanov's dazzling, paranoid mixture of locked-room mystery, 1970s Euro giallo, classic noir whodunit, and (unbelievably) alien sci-fi ala THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. Based on a novel by famed Soviet authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (STALKER, HARD TO BE A GOD), the hall-of-mirrors plot follows Glebsky as he's trapped by avalanche in the ski lodge with a rogues' gallery of weird suspects: tubercular gangster Hinckus (Mikk Mikiver), creepy hotel owner Snewahr (Jüri Järvet, KING LEAR), a wall-climbing physicist (Lembit Peterson), a louche, wig-wearing beauty out of a Bryan Ferry song (Irena Kriauzaite) - oh, and the Dead Mountaineer's faithful St. Bernard. The interior of the hotel (brilliantly art directed by Tõnu Virve and Priit Vaher, and photographed by Jüri Sillart) is straight out of a Dario Argento or Sergio Martino thriller: all chrome-and-marble with Space Age modern designs, drenched in champagne and feather boas. Featuring a stellar electronica / prog score by composer Sven Grünberg, the film combines an eerie THE SHINING-like mountain locale with speculative sci-fi straight out of Chariots of the Gods. "This is the end of the road. The only way is back," as the hotel owner cryptically smiles. Newly restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile in collaboration with the Estonian Film Institute and Film Archive. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. After getting into a scuffle and finding themselves stranded in a remote southern town, brothers Mike and Josh discover that they’re in the midst of a much deeper problem. That night, Mike is attacked by someone — or something — and the following morning, everything about the sleepy town seems to have changed, as many of the locals appear sick and begin exhibiting increasingly unhinged and violent behavior. With the help of some equally concerned townsfolk, the brothers soon discover that forces beyond their control are slowly transforming the citizens into a horrifying form of the living dead… A late-stage drive-in chiller which harkens back to the nuclear horror sci-fi favorites of decades past with an environmentally conscious update, stuntman-turned-director John 'Bud' Cardos’ (Kingdom of the Spiders) MUTANT stars character actor legend Wings Hauser (Vice Squad), Bo Hopkins (American Graffiti, The Wild Bunch), Lee Montgomery (Ben, Burnt Offerings), and many more. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. When Ann, the wealthy yet mentally unstable wife of accomplished author Larry, claims to have found her husband brutally murdered in her stables, her psychiatrist, Dr. Marc, and Larry’s secretary, Mary, are skeptical — not least because there is no body to be found. What’s more, Dr. Marc finds a note from Larry saying he’s going away for a while to clear his head. A year later, Larry returns to the house, but Ann is adamant that this man is not her husband, despite the protests of Dr. Marc and Mary to the contrary. To add to her mounting turmoil, Ann starts to experience gruesome hallucinations and receives phone calls from someone claiming to be the real Larry, contacting her from beyond the grave. As those around her start being dispatched in various grisly ways, is Ann losing her grip on sanity, or could something even more diabolical be afoot? Helmed by Enzo Milioni, director of giallo favorite The Sister of Ursula (1978), and starring Euro-horror regular Zora Kerova (Cannibal Ferox, The New York Ripper), ESCAPE FROM DEATH (aka Luna di sangue) was produced as part of a series of direct-to-video and television films released under the banner of “Lucio Fulci presents”, which also includes Fulci’s own Touch of Death and Umberto Lenzi’s Hell’s Gate. SOMETIMES GOOD PEOPLE DO EVIL THINGS. Working from an Academy Award-nominated screenplay by Scott B. Smith (adapting his own bestselling novel), director Sam Raimi swapped his trademark hyperkinetic horror for stark, bone-chilling tension in the expertly-crafted, critically-acclaimed thriller A Simple Plan. Hank Mitchell (Bill Paxton) and his wife Sarah (Bridget Fonda) have big dreams and a baby on the way, but are stuck in the small Minnesota town where Hank grew up alongside his sweet but naive brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton, Oscar-nominated for Best Supporting Actor). One day while walking in the woods, Hank, Jacob, and Jacob’s friend Lou (Brent Briscoe) discover a small plane buried in the snow, with a dead pilot inside... and a duffel bag containing over $4 million in cash. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to grasp the American dream in one fell swoop, if they can just keep it a secret – but Hank soon learns that keeping that secret will come at a terrible cost. A bleak, heart-stopping morality play with allusions to Macbeth and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Raimi’s favorite film), A Simple Plan returns in a brand new director-approved 4K remaster accompanied by new and exclusive bonus features.
