Description
When a recent widower is advised by his son to find a new wife, he seeks the advice of a colleague having been out of the dating scene for many years. One of the most notorious J-Horror films ever made, Takashi Miike's Audition exploded onto the festival circuit at the turn of the 21st century to a chorus of awards and praise. The film catapulted Miike to the international scene and paved the way for such other genre delights as Ichii the Killer and 13 Assassins. When recent widower Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi, American Yakuza) is advised by his son to find a new wife, he seeks the advice of a colleague having been out of the dating scene for many years. The two men decide to take advantage of their position working at a film company to stage an audition to find the perfect partner. Interviewing a series of women, Shigeharu soon becomes enchanted by Asami (Eihi Shiina), a quiet, 24-year-old woman, who is immediately responsive to his charms. However, events quickly take a very dark and twisted turn as we find that Asami isn't what she seems to be... Pulling the audience into a story that will lead to one of the most harrowing climaxes in cinema history, Miike twists and turns us through delirious editing and shocking visuals for one of the most depraved nightmares of all time, now presented in stunning 4K UHD. Description
*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. The world of French cinema is vast and multi-layered, as likely to veer into genre film as it is to pursue more arty, even absurdist notions. In terms of embracing dark moods and themes, be it in the form of murderous urges, aberrant sexual leanings, self-destructive machinations, or outright neuroses, the Gallic lens is perfectly adept. Here we present four varied approaches to the thriller à la française. LES COUSINES (THE COUSINS) Lucile, paralyzed and mute from a childhood trauma, lives with her sister Josine and their cousin Elisa. While the mother of Lucile and Josine frets over increasing costs and the complications of Lucile reaching legal age, Josine and Elisa live reckless lives of sexual abandon while mentally and physically torturing Lucile, their powerless victim. Playing their cruel games, getting high, and seducing men aren't enough for these two; they're in search of darker sadistic kicks. Also released as From Ear to Ear, this shocker of modernity and liberated morals was directed by veteran cinematographer Louis Soulanes (La Pointe Courte) and features Solange Pradel (World on a Wire), Alain Doutey (The Big Red One), and Katia Tchenko (The Bishop's Bedroom). QUI? (WHO?) An arguing couple gets into a car on the Brittany coast where, driving erratically, it suddenly launches off a cliff and crashes into the waters below. The man Claude disappears into the sea, while the woman Marina manages to escape, and soon comes under questioning by the police as well as Claude's brother Serge. Serge soon falls in love with Marina, despite her hazy, suspicious recollection of the accident. Returning to Paris, the two begin to retrace the crash and realize how inscrutable Claude was, amid coping with Marina's fractured memory and heightened nerves. Claude's body never turns up, and it becomes trickier to find out what, and moreover who is to blame for the accident. A giallo-esque thriller from Léonard Keigel (A Woman One Day) awash in a gorgeous score from jazz legend Claude Bolling (Flic Story), it stars Romy Schneider (The Swimming Pool), Maurice Ronet (Bloodline), and Gabriele Tinti (Mystère). LE SECRET (THE SECRET) Author Thomas and his wife Julia enjoy a quiet life isolated in the French countryside until one day when David, on the run and anxious, wanders onto their land. Sensing a man in need as well as a potential adventure, Thomas commits to help him, but Julia has her suspicions. As pressure mounts and a manhunt ensues, the trio hit the road, while David's story of escape and persecution sounds increasingly neurotic, even unlikely. What is the secret behind David's incarceration and escape, the burden he carries but refuses to share? How far will the couple go to help a man who may be mentally unstable evade capture? This taut conspiracy thriller was directed by Robert Enrico (The Old Gun) and stars Jean-Louis Trintignant (The Great Silence), Marlène Jobert (Rider on the Rain) and Philippe Noiret (Cinema Paradiso). NUIT D'OR (GOLDEN NIGHT) Michel Fournier is back, seemingly from the dead, and vows to exact revenge on all who wronged him, particularly his family. Menacingly issuing each of them a voodoo doll, his threats and intentions get increasingly obtuse as the world around him proves nightmarish and warped. From encountering a death cult to conducting a kidnapping, to trashing an underground casino, Fournier's anxious, infernal rage is at the center of this quixotic and noir-infused exercise. Pairing lush yet unnerving visuals with a score by Chabrol regular Pierre Jansen (The Butcher), the film features the singular Klaus Kinski (Paganini) as Fournier, along with Marie Dubois (Jules and Jim), Maurice Ronet (The Champagne Murders), and Anny Duperey (Two or Three Things I Know About Her), under direction by the multi-talented writer/director/journalist Serge Moati (writer of The Nude Vampire). Description
A stint in prison usually has one of two effects on a man -- it either breaks him down or makes him stronger. For Driver (Dwayne Johnson), a 10-year sentence proved the latter. His strength was not just fueled by time, but also by a hunger to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his own imprisonment. Untouchable on the 'inside,' he made plenty of enemies in prison - men who were counting the days until his release so they could exact their own revenge on the outside. Now, on the day of his release, he is hell-bent on reaping vengeance upon the four men responsible for his brother's murder. With a list of names and addresses in hand, he sprints out of the prison gates and is immediately on his mission.

As the investigation progresses a simple robbery leads to a murder case... Directed by and starring Petro Germi (The Railroad Man) as the growling Inspector, The Facts of Murder was loosely adapted from celebrated author Carlo Emilio Gadda's novel and is shot with inky shadows reminiscent of film noir, while the mystery element prefigures the giallo. Description
*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. The Eurocrime film, or poliziottesco, went through many of the same phases as other trends in Italian cinema. By virtue of necessity, stretching its boundaries or tooling with the genre was inevitable. Perhaps equally inevitably, given the sheer number of films produced, quite a few fell through the cracks over time. Three rare, distinct features late in the genre's cycle, each retaining the big names associated with it, are collected here. IL GIORNO DEL COBRA (THE DAY OF THE COBRA) Larry Stanziani is a bottom-of-the-barrel private eye in San Francisco, quietly scraping by to make ends meet. But in a former life, Stanziani (Franco Nero) was The Cobra, one of the most capable and deadly secret agents the world had ever seen. Called back into action in Italy after a narcotics agent is killed, Larry uncovers a syndicate that'll attempt every dirty trick in the book to finish him off. But they don't know that The Cobra always stays one step ahead of any double-cross ever invented. Directed by Italo-action legend Enzo G. Castellari (The Big Racket) as a showcase for Nero's range, this cheeky Eurocrime/gumshoe hybrid also stars Sybil Danning (Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf), Mario Maranzana (Behind Convent Walls), Mickey Knox (Cemetery Man), and Romano Puppo (The Big Gundown). LA BANDA DEL TRUCIDO (THE RASCAL'S GANG aka DIRTY GANG) Naples is being crippled by crime, and now an important police leader has been assassinated. The grizzled Commissario Ghini (Luc Merenda) is tough enough to tackle the crime wave and is the only one to fill his shoes. Meanwhile, Monnezza (Tomas Milian) has his hands full, too: he's running his cheeky trattoria while also teaching a new batch of hapless schemers at his low-rent school for thieves. Balancing Milian's popular comedic chops as a loveable rogue and Merenda's hard-as-nails, stunt-driven performance, director Stelvio Massi (Arabella: Black Angel) pulls out all the stops for this wildly entertaining ride. Also starring Elio Zamuto (Violent Naples), Katia Christine (Designated Victim), and Massimo Vanni (1990: The Bronx Warriors). IL COMMISSARIO DI FERRO (THE IRON COMMISSIONER) Commissario Mariani (Maurizio Merli) has been taking down crooks for years, and these days the weight of it shows. He's divorced, his son thinks of him more as a friend than a father, his superiors are critical of him, and even the children of people he put away are coming after him. But he's not the Iron Commissioner for nothing, and however seasoned, he's not afraid to knock around a few hoods to get the job done. When a kidnapping occurs too close to home, Mariani doesn't hesitate to spring into action. A remarkably efficient and realistic feature from technical journeyman Stelvio Massi (Five Women for the Killer), showing plenty of tricks up his sleeve, it also stars Janet Agren (Bakterion), Ettore Mani (A.A.A. Masseuse, Good-Looking, Offers Her Services), and Chris Avram (Obscene Desire). Bonus Features: 1. 3-disc Region Free Blu-ray Set 2. From the savagery of cold-blooded murder to the perverse realities of war, tragic accidents, and the everyday lives of those who collect, dissect, and bury the dead, this descent into morbidity exposes a truth that all of us will one day face. One of the most banned, censored, controversial, and notorious films ever made, FACES OF DEATH (1979) changed cinema forever. A surprise home video blockbuster that spawned three sequels, the film was met with both praise and condemnation, along with legions of fans and hordes of protestors. Skillfully combining grueling imagery depicting the stark reality of mortality, blended with cleverly staged, ultra-gory re-enactments of murders, suicides, executions, and more too horrible to imagine, Vinegar Syndrome Archive is excited to at last bring FACES OF DEATH to 4K UHD newly restored from its long-lost camera original, and presented completely uncut and fully sourced from film elements for the first time on disc, it remains just as shocking today as it was nearly 50 years ago. Bonus Features: 1. 2-disc Set: 4K Ultra HD / Region A Blu-ray 2. 4K UHD presented in Dolby Vision High-Dynamic-Range 3. Description
The power of music connects American musicians with their West African counterparts in a historical concert not seen in over 20 years. In March 1971, several dozen American soul, jazz & gospel artists embarked on a journey to Ghana, West Africa that would change the lives of all involved. For the African American artists, this was a journey about personal roots, history, discovery, loss, pain and joy. The film documents a one-of-a-kind awe-inspiring festival where black American souls connected with black West African souls through the enduring power of music. Directed by Academy AwardⓇ winner Denis Sanders and produced by Tom Mosk & Richard Bock, the resulting concert film/documentary features electrifying performances in front of over 100,000 Ghanaians who were witnessing these legendary artists for the first time. The film was recently restored to the original edit by reconstructing each scene using the high quality 2K transfers from the original film elements, which were shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio. This is a monumental concert film that features artists at the peak of their powers. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue deliver fiery renditions of "River Deep-Mountain High," "Soul to Soul," a cut specifically written for this concert; and Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long" [appears as a special Blu-ray outtake]. Wilson Pickett, the most popular American artist known to West Africans at the time, delivers a rousing finale of "In the Midnight Hour," "Funky Broadway," and "Land of a 1000 Dances." Gospel/Soul family group the Staple Singers were on hand to perform "When Will Be We Paid" and "Are You Sure". Les McCann and Eddie Harris introduced many to jazz via spirited performances of "The Price You Gotta Pay to Be Free" and "Hey Jorler," the latter featuring local Ghanaian artist Amoah Azangeo. Santana, with guest percussionist Willie Bobo was the wild card. The group only had one African American member but given its reliance on Afro-Cuban and Latin American rhythm constructs played the most African-sounding music of any with "Black Magic Woman"/"Gypsy Queen" and "Jungle Strut". Bonus Materials Trailer Outtake performance: Ike & Tina Turner – “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” Commentary Track One: Mavis Staples – The Staple Singers Commentary Track Two: Les McCann with Kevin Griffin (The Voices of East Harlem) Commentary Track Three: Producer Tom Mosk with re-issue producers David Peck of Reelin’ In the Years Productions Commentary Track Four: Ike Turner, Michael Shrieve (Santana), Obo Addy (Ghanian drummer), Kevin Griffin and Les McCann. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* The kids your mother never let you play with. Charismatic painter Steve (Scanners star Stephen Lack) has carved out a reputation as Montréal’s premiere drug connection, trafficking narcotics with a crew of friends and lovers living as a makeshift “family” on the fringes of society. But tensions rise when the police catch wind of their latest shipment, and Steve strikes up a friendship with a university student eager to observe the group’s illicit lifestyle for his graduate thesis. As the walls start to close in, old jealousies and new paranoias surface, and the family scrambles to adapt or perish. Featuring seven songs by acclaimed Leonard Cohen collaborator Lewis Furey, the directorial debut of Allan Moyle (Times Square, Pump Up the Volume, Empire Records) is an innovative drug drama that set the stage for Drugstore Cowboy and other celebrated portraits of addiction. Equal parts Warhol and Cassavetes, the film’s docu-fiction approach earned widespread praise for its urgency and vivid reality, with The Toronto International Film Festival citing it as “one of the best films of the ’70s.” Out of official circulation for decades, THE RUBBER GUN returns in a stunning new restoration from the original camera negatives. Bonus Features: 1. Newly scanned and restored in 2K from the original 16mm A/B negatives by Canadian International Pictures with sound transferred from the answer print 2.
